The events of the novel take place in the twenty years that preceded the conquest of Egypt, and in some of its scenes the conqueror Amr ibn al-Aas and his wife Rita (Raita) and the companion Hatib ibn Abi Balta’a appear, in addition to fictional characters through which the fictional text reveals the nature of life and man and the religious trends thatprevailed in the region extending from the Nile Delta to the north of the Arabian Peninsula, at a time when Islam appeared and spread east and west
