The purpose that al-Ghazali wanted in writing this book was nothing but to point out the contradictions of philosophers in the divine sciences, "and what the dispute in it relates to a fundamental principle of religion, such as saying about the occurrence of the world and the attributes of the maker and the statement of the gathering of bodies." Philosophers denied these principles, which prompted al-Ghazali to object to them. Without entering a party to support one doctrine over the other, but deliberately disturbing their doctrine and rejecting the faces of their evidence, which shows their incoherence. Al-Ghazali identifies the philosophers' contradictions in their divine sciences and nature in twenty issues, all of which revolve around three main topics: God, the world, and the soul.
